Complying with basic OSHA standards for Health and Safety Training

Annuvia, Inc, San Francisco, CA, Fri, 2008-06-20

Client Issue

A small business was required to offer First Aid, CPR and blood borne pathogen training to employees but had experienced a succession of difficulties in attracting both staff attendees and highly qualified instructors to conduct those trainings. Beset by a spate of unreturned calls, instructor cancellations, upfront payment requirements, and ineffective instruction by individuals who had never themselves delivered the interventions they were teaching, employee attendance dropped sharply. As a result, the business was having difficulty complying with OSHA standards for Health and Safety Training.

Solution

As one of the nation’s largest safety training organizations, Annuvia employs a multitude of well qualified instructors with advanced certifications in the subjects they teach. All of Annuvia’s instructors currently work in the field and use what they teach in their professional lives. Annuvia was able to offer the employer many choices of available dates and times of instruction. The employer was assured of high quality instruction and that its focus would be on developing the competence and comfort level of the employees so that the training would be used appropriately when and if it was ever needed.

To generate interest in attendance, the Annuvia Program Coordinator worked directly with the company’s Human Resources Department and provided template emails to the site contact which were in turn sent to all course participants along with the selected instructor’s bio. A course summary was also included.

Results

The initial course was quickly filled to capacity and employees requested additional classes. The business firm chose to implement an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) program after learning about its importance and ease of use. Annuvia was able to put this program into practice within two weeks of inception. Additionally, personal disaster kits for desk and home use were offered. Training is ongoing, year-round, and enthusiastically attended by employees. The business is now fully compliant with all OSHA standards for Health and Safety training of its employees.
